I’ve had an “older” girl crush on Meryl Streep for many years. She is in possession of an odd, yet undeniable beauty and her courage is evidenced in the projects she has taken on. I just love her and I wanted to recognize the contribution she is currently making to those of us included in the “mature woman” set, through her new movie, “Hope Springs” which also stars Tommy Lee Jones.
To say the movie has a lot of tongues wagging would be an understatement. The tongues are going nuts! “Hope Springs” explores a subject that usually remains in the “unmentionables” category; Sex after a “certain age.” They play a long time married, middle-aged, couple trying to figure out how to get back to the business of getting it on.

The fact that the issue of sex in prime years is still a taboo subject is rather mind-boggling. I can’t help but wonder why? Just think about it for a moment. We are the same women who demanded, fought for and won acceptance and/or change in every other area of our lives, yet for some reason we have meekly accepted being viewed as sexless, has been beings.
Most women, in fact, encourage being dismissed as non-sexual beings by refusing to even discuss “doing it.”
Why do you think that is? Why are we embarrassed? I’d love to read your take on this.

I know the top picture is tongue in cheek but I sure wouldn’t want anyone to think that that picture is from Hope Springs. I agree with you that this was a marvelous movie for show casing issues of sex in the older generations

I love that pic..It’s hilarious!
I am going to have to go see this movie! I’ve never thought about why we don’t talk about sex after a certain age. I mean, the kids are gone, no, or at least fewer, interruptions, we can afford to take off and travel to some extent, to romantic locations, so this should be like a second honeymoon phase of sorts.
As far as being sexless beings, hmmm…. I feel better at 49 and am far more “active” so to speak, than I was in my 20′s and 30′s. So, like you, I’m not quiet sure why there is such a stigma, but it’s a good thing to ponder on for a while.
Great post!
