This year, Philadelphia will join in the global celebration of Fashion’s Night Out which will take place on September 6. FNO serves as a preview of Fashion Week, a week long series of events which officially begins September 13. and lasts through September 19.

Fashion’s Night Out, a collaboration between Vogue Magazine and the Council of Fashion Designers of America is the brainchild of Vogue Editor, Anna Wintour. (A woman I have a great deal of admiration for.)
FNO began in 2009 as 1) A means to encourage consumers to shop and support the fashion industry and 2) raise money to support various charities. The first event was held in New York City and has grown to include over 250 cities in 18 countries.

Rarely does Philadelphia come to mind when one is thinking of Fashion Hot Spots and Mayor Michael Nutter wants to change that. When he made the announcement earlier this month at a press conference my first thought was, “Huh, he’s kidding.” Then he said:
“Philadelphia is now able to show the world we are a city that’s ready to assume it’s rightful place among the fashion capitals of the world. Whether it’s New York or London or Paris or Milan, we are a city of creative ingenuity and entrepreneurship.”
At that point, my Philadelphia pride kicked in and I thought, “Why not?” Philadelphia has been slowly, but steadily making gains in the industry and producing some awesome designers.
